Fishing for King Mackerel (Kingfish)

We can Kingfish year round off the Jupiter Beaches. Although November till April is the best time to target kingfish. From the Jupiter Inlet, where the Sea Candy is docked, we only have a short 2 mile run to start fishing. The “Smoker Kings” predominately follow the baitfish to Jupiter waters in January and February. Since the larger Kingfish are less inhibited at night hitting our top drifting baits especially around a full moon we can customize any trip. Day time slow trolling, drifting or live bait kite-fishing will produce 20 pound average Kingfish though it is not uncommon to catch fish larger than 40 pounds. The winter Kingfish schools are much larger and highly concentrated, that’s when the bite is exciting and “super” hot! Kingfish are hard hitting and make drag screaming runs. It is not uncommon to have the kings skyrocketing out of the water, guzzling the bait while in mid-air.
